Howard the Duck occupies a strange place in Marvel Comics history, simultaneously the most laughable creation and a reflection of the most biting 70’s satire and seachange for superhero comics.
It’s a well-known if still seemingly impossible accident of culture that Howard the Duck was one of the earliest comic book movie adaptations, and by George Lucas of all people! If you haven’t seen Howard the Duck, save yourself the trouble. It’s an absolute mess, despite a raucous final number.
And so it was, that for decades after Steve Gerber brought Howard to the broader Marvel Universe, Howard was pure laughingstock.
Recent years, and an out-of-left-field Guardians of the Galaxy end-credits cameo, have restored Howard to a substantially more respectable comedic role. The world-weary straight man in a world of hairless clowns.
