Created by Chris Claremont and John Byrne, Emma Frost was the White Queen of the Hellfire Club. She initially opposed the X-Men, but soon we started learning more about her and how much she cares about children. After that, Emma began to change sides and have a more friendly relationship with the X-Men and the New Mutants.
Emma is a deep character and she is often said to be one of the most interesting characters in the X-Men universe. She has been part of many acclaimed stories over time, like the New X-Men run by Grant Morrison, Generation X, and the now publishing Krakoan age that started with Hickman’s House of X & Powers of X.
*Please, note that a lot of the comics listed here were being published at the same time. When it’s really important, I write the issue order, but if I did that for everything it would be very confusing. Don’t worry, it won’t hurt your understanding of the character or of the story.
Emma as a Villain
Emma Frost first appears as a villain and a member of the Hellfire Club at the start of the “Dark Phoenix Saga.” Though the White Queen continues to oppose the X-Men and the New Mutants for quite a while, we are shown glimpses of her good intentions and relationship with the Hellions.

As the White Queen from the Hellfire Club, Emma Frost tries to recruit Kate Pryde. When the girl decides to join the X-Men, Emma kidnaps them. In the end, Kate and the rest of the team fight Emma. The story ends with the White Queen presumably dead.

Emma Frost telepathically forced Kate’s parents to make her change schools. Storm helped and drove her to the school, but Emma used the opportunity to switch minds with Storm. The White Queen tried to defeat the X-Men from the inside, but in the end, Storm came back and saved everyone.

Emma recruited Angelica Jones, Firestar, before Xavier could and made her part of her Hellions. Firestar soon saw she was being tricked and left the school.
The New Mutants were left traumatized after dying and being resurrected by the Beyonder. Emma and Magneto work together to help the kids get better.
Soon, Magneto and the students were invited to a Hellfire Club party. There the New Mutants and the Hellions developed a rivalry.

Knowing she would be attacked, Emma contacted the X-Men to protect her and her students. But still, Trevor Fitzroy and the Sentinels left Emma comatose and killed the Hellions. Professor Xavier felt subtle signs of life in Emma and agreed to take care of her.

Months later, Emma woke up and, by mistake, switched bodies with Iceman. She made use of his powers in more effective ways, surprising everyone. When Emma found out the Hellions were dead, she felt so guilty that she almost gave up on living, but Xavier and Banshee arrived in time to help her.
She told Xavier she did everything to protect her students, but they would probably have been better if they had stayed with him. Then, Banshee said that instead of looking to the past, they should try to make a better world for the next generation of mutants.
Afterward, Emma and Banshee rescued some mutants captured by the Phalanx.

If you are an X-Men fan and have read at least a few recent comics, you probably know what happened in Genosha. If you don’t, well… it was another horrible day for the mutants. Cassandra Nova sent a Sentinel there that killed over 16 million mutants. As a defense mechanism, a secondary mutation was triggered, giving Emma the ability to turn into an organic diamond; thanks to that, she survived the attack. With nowhere to go, Emma joined the X-Men.
At the end of the run, Emma and Scott started a relationship and became responsible for the Xavier Institute.

In this run, Emma didn’t believe Laura Kinney, X-23 at the time, should stay at the institute, and even less be part of the X-Men. She thought the girl was too dangerous.
If you don’t read anything of this, please at least give chapter #28 a chance. Oh my God, I love that chapter so much, it’s one of my favorite Emma Frost moments. After Stryke attacks the institute and kills many of the students, Carol Danvers tries to talk about the Registration Act and how the Avengers and the X-Men could work together, but Emma stops her and says the Avengers don’t actually help the mutants when they are in need.

Inhumans vs. X-Men
Unfortunately, this was not a good era for X-Men comics in general, and Emma suffered a lot. She did many things that made little sense and some that were completely out of character, like killing children with anti-Inhuman Sentinels. Read only if you are really curious or a completist because it isn’t good in giving you a great characterization of her.
But there are some good comics in the mix unrelated to the Inhumans’ side of the story, like Marvel #1000 and the teen Jean Grey solo run.
