Fall/Winter of 1940 brought stories of Batman and Robin stopping crimes ranging from altering people’s appearances to literally fighting off controlled giants and dwarfs in a far off land. GOTHAM ACADEMY #5 Review!
Darwyn Cooke (New Frontier, Parker) has famously derided both Marvel and DC for their habit of “catering to the perverted needs of forty-five year old men.” He’s not alone in that critique either. All over the comic industry, fans and creators alike have lamented the saturation of mature content and the lack of quality all-ages material. Study: What’s the Impact of Marvel Unlimited on Comic Book Trade Sales?
It’s no secret that I’m a proponent of Marvel Unlimited, as both the best way to catch up on Marvel Comics, and as a forward-thinking business model for comic book publishers.
In my very first review of the subscription service (2012!) I couldn’t help but note how much money I was saving. At the time, Marvel Unlimited annual subscriptions were $59.99, meaning a subscription was the equivalent of 6 trade collections at $9.99 a pop (which would be a great value for TPB’s!). History of the Batman #3: Year 1940, Part One
The Caped Crusader and the Boy Wonder had many adventures in their early years with DC Comics. But in the year 1940 they were only featured in the Batman and Detective Comics publications. Unlike today, when ‘Batman’ first began, it was a seasonal comic book. Instead of a dozen comics a year, only four published in our current timeline.
