The Best New Image Comics of 2018

There’s a prevailing sense this year that Image Comics has stalled, and it’s not hard to see why. Breakout mega hits like Saga and Walking Dead are either on hiatus or well past the thrill of feeling new.

Likewise, juggernaut series (and some of my all-time favorite comics) Invincible and Kill or Be Killed officially concluded this year. Toss in some great ones that are steadily meandering through exciting long arcs (East of West, Sex Criminals, Black Monday Murders), and the creator-owned publishing haven doesn’t seem as hot as it has in years past. Despite their status as founding Avengers, Ant-Man and Wasp remain the perpetual underdogs of Marvel heroes in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. This claim could have gone to the Guardians of the Galaxy, but due to a critically acclaimed modern run (the 2008 to 2010 era written by Dan Abnett and Andy Lanning), and one of the better MCU franchises, the oddest MCU inclusions remain the size-shifters. Best DC Comics Of 2018

DC Comics has maintained their status as comic book retailer and critic’s favorite son throughout 2018. Now approximately two years since the launch of DC Universe: Rebirth #1, the publisher has been hitting a *majority* of the right notes (though far from all given the damn countless number of comics credits that still bear the dark mark of Eddie Berganza). Likewise, the publisher’s major 2018 event, DC Metal, was one of the best superhero crossovers of the decade, setting the stage for a compelling Justice League lineup through the end of the year. Best Family Superteams in Comic Books!

In many ways, the modern superhero comic book medium is founded on principles of family. Marvel’s entire universe begins with “The First Family,” the cosmic ray induced Fantastic Four. They’re far from the first superpowered family superteam in comics, though, with the likes of the Marvels (now owned, of course, by DC Comics) tapping into the dramatic potential as well.
