One of the few Secret Wars series not based on a prior storyline, writer Gerry Duggan and artist Nik Virella give Marvel’s pantheon an all-new Old West overhaul. Although the broad strokes tend toward tribute of the Silver and Golden Ages, it’s unfolds with a noir-ish pastiche reminiscent of gritty 1970s cinema. LANDO #1 Review: “Criminally Smooth!”
No exception to Marvel’s continued gemtastic mining of a galaxy far, far away, the new mini-series by writer Charles Soule and artist Alex Maleev picks up with the titular (anti-) hero making some sexy yet questionable life choices. Han Solo may be the Star Wars Universe poster boy for outright bad-assness but nobody makes doing the wrong thing look as suave and dashing as Mr. Calrissian! SECRET WARS #4 Review: “Marvel’s All-Business, All-Plot Point!”
After last issue’s talk-heavy lull, writer Jonathan Hickman’s epic extravaganza snaps back into shape and plows ahead with renewed force (and then some). AGE OF ULTRON VS. MARVEL ZOMBIES #1 Review: “When Apocalyptic Doomsday Scenarios Compete, You Win!”
What happens when an aggressive robotic dominion has perpetual border disputes with the neighboring super-powered undead? Possessing a rambly title and nth-level strength of premise, the collaborators of Marvel’s All-New Invaders return to document the widescreen spectacle. Effectively a one-stop-shopping Secret Wars “sub-event”, the real stars aren’t the titular monstrosities but the trophy case of heroes that pepper the twenty-one pages.
